About Italian

Italian (italiano) is the Romance language closest to its Latin parent among the major Romance languages. It's the language of opera, of pasta, of the Renaissance — and one of the most rewarding to speak out loud because of its musical, vowel-rich phonology.

Where it's spoken

Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, Switzerland (Ticino), and Italian diaspora communities

Interesting facts

  • 1Italian is the closest major Romance language to Vulgar Latin
  • 2Almost every Italian word ends in a vowel, which makes speech famously melodic
  • 3Standard Italian is based on the Tuscan dialect of Dante
