Spanish (español or castellano) is a Romance language that grew out of Vulgar Latin in the Iberian Peninsula and travelled across the Atlantic with the Spanish Empire. Today it is the world's second-most spoken native language, with vibrant regional varieties from Madrid to Buenos Aires.
